GCM professionals playing pickle ball.

Changing jobs is never easy. There are many unknowns when you transition positions and companies, but it always opens your eyes to new possibilities and perspectives.

At GCM, our employee experience is just as important as supporting our Captive insurance partners. “Own Your Outcomes” is a phrase you’ll hear often when working with us, and it’s a mentality that extends beyond our work with clients. We want our employees to own their outcomes and pursue opportunities to grow with GCM, and investing in our employee experience helps make that happen.

For this blog, we decided to do something a little different. When new employees join the GCM team, we follow up with them after the dust has settled to learn more about why they chose GCM and if their experience has lived up to their expectations so far. We compiled answers from newly minted team members to share a glimpse into why we love what we do and who we do it with at GCM.

Why Choose GCM?

Did you know that half of our recent hires are not from the Captive insurance industry? While it certainly helps to have context for the work we do at GCM, we love welcoming new team members who bring diverse perspectives and experiences from other industries.

“With no insurance experience, I believed GCM would be a great place to learn and develop,” said a recent hire. “I heard great things especially about the culture and the nurturing environment.”

“It was time for me to move to the next chapter in my career, and I’ve always had an interest in the insurance industry,” said another of our new employees. “I was introduced to GCM by a fellow colleague and a friend, and when I did my research on the company’s mission and values, I believed I’d fit very well with the organization’s culture.”

The combined appeal of company culture and professional opportunities has been a recurring theme for more than a few of our team members. Another new hire, initially drawn to GCM to experience a broader scope of compliance work, said they knew in their interview that this is where they wanted to be.

“Alanna and Jen made me feel really comfortable in the interview. We had a few laughs, and I thought, ‘Yep! I want to work here,’” they shared.

Once they joined, new employees found a helpful environment where onboarding was a priority even during busy seasons.

“None of my questions were left unanswered, and the level of patience everyone displayed was a pleasant surprise.”

Work-Life Balance and Culture

For many of our recent hires, GCM is a smaller company than their previous employer. Working in an office where everyone knows each other’s name can be a big change for those coming from larger organizations, but it’s been a positive experience for our new team members.

“It’s a good change as I believe the size of the company highly influences the family-like culture and creates a better learning environment,” said one employee.

The close-knit atmosphere also lends itself to work-life balance, with 100 percent of recent hires stating their work-life balance has improved since joining GCM.

The open and positive culture is felt at every level of the business, with one recent hire sharing that it’s more people-centered and focused on personal growth versus competitive comparisons with peers.

“I love that we work closely and directly with senior leaders, and we treat each other with respect,” added another new team member. “Large organizations have management layers at every level. It’s tricky to impact change and for your voice to be heard unless you’re part of the top-tier decision-makers.”

Even for those who haven’t been with GCM long, the difference is apparent. An employee who took their survey after a month with the company valued the trust created by the leadership structure.

“I could tell right off the bat how amazing people are as they all work as a team, so it just shows how great the culture is,” they said. “I also noticed that senior management doesn’t have assigned parking, which just sets the tone from the top that everyone is treated fairly – no one is better [than anyone else] and that we all just have different roles.”

Opportunities to Grow

We all pursue new roles for our own reasons, but opportunities to grow are among the most important for many job seekers. Our “Own Your Outcomes” initiative empowers employees to identify how they’d like to grow and find ways to make it happen within GCM or with our partners at Innovative Captive Strategies and Holmes Murphy.

At GCM, we’re proud to foster an environment that prioritizes learning and growth for our employees, and we’re even more proud that it’s clear to new hires from day one. As one of our newest team members shared, “Deciding on a new job does not have to be scary if you start the journey with the right people!”
